New
Delhi: Today is the last day to link your Aadhar Card with Permanent Account
Number (PAN). From July 1 the linking of Aadhaar card and PAN card is
compulsory for taxpayers. To file income tax returns, a taxpayer should have
both Aadhar card and PAN card and must link both the documents before Saturday
(June 30).
Here’s
what you need to know about linking your Aadhaar and PAN cards:
How
to Link Aadhaar with PAN Card
You
can link your Aadhaar card with PAN by visiting the official website of Income
Tax Department of India at www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in.
Step
1: Enter your Permanent Account Number.
Step
2: Enter your Aadhaar Card.
Step
3: Enter your name as per Aadhaar Card.
Step
4: Enter Date of Birth.
Step
5: Enter Captcha.
Step
6: Click on “Link Aadhaar.”
You
can also send an SMS to 56161 or 567678 from your Registered Mobile Number
(RMN) of Aadhaar Card in this
format:
UIDPAN
What
if You Fail to Link
The
first impact is that you will not be able to file your ITR after July 1 2017,
if you fail to link your Aadhaar with PAN. Secondly, if you do not link or fail
to link your Aadhaar card with your PAN card, then your PAN card might be
rendered invalid by December 2017.
Currently,
99% adult population in India is enrolled with Aadhaar and the government deems
it possible that every adult will be covered by the end of 2017.
What
If You Don’t have an Aadhaar Card
You
can apply for the Aadhaar card and provide the application number as a document
proving that you’ve applied for one.
Those
who are not able to link their Aadhaar and PAN cards by July 1 will have the
option to mention the UIDAI-provided number in the e-ITR and this will be
considered a valid linking of the two unique numbers, a senior Income Tax
Department
official told PTI.
A
number of queries and doubts have risen on the issue of Aadhaar-PAN linking in
the wake of the government making it clear that Aadhaar will be a “must” for
filing ITRs and obtaining a new PAN from July 1.
