ALLAHABAD: 'Philately Day' was celebrated by Postal department as a part of National Postal Week on Saturday. Various programmes were also held in Allahabad and Varanasi, including a Philatelic workshop, letter writing competition, painting competition and quiz competition for students to promote philately.
On the occasion, Krishna Kumar Yadav, director, postal services, said philately is a term used not only for collection of stamps but also their study. He further added that every stamp has a story of its own and there was a need to link the young generation with this story. He called postage stamps as 'carrier of emotions,' which carries emotions from one person to another.
Yadav said a postage stamp might look like just a small piece of paper but there are values attached with it. He said that a postage stamp is a tiny ambassador which travels across countries carrying along the civilization, culture and heritage of its country. It is an icon of a country's people, their belief and philosophy, history, culture, heritage, ambitions and expectations, he added.
Yadav also narrated an interesting story about a European woman of 19th century who thought of decorating her dressing room with postage stamps. "She collected sixteen thousand stamps from her acquaintances and for the remaining she released an advertisement in 'Times of London' requesting the readers to send used postage stamps to complete her collection. Thereafter, collecting stamps gained popularity as a hobby in the world, in due course of time," he said.
Yadav urged schools and students to open a Philatelic Deposit Account in post offices to get stamps at their door step every month. He said postage stamps can be very useful in enriching and strengthening our education system.
