The Chennai Metro Rail was inaugurated by Tamilnadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalitha, from her office via video conference on 29th June 2015. Steered by A. Preethi, a 28-year-old woman and a diploma holder in engineering, the first train of the Chennai Metro Rail started from Alandur Station and headed to Koyambedu, a 10.1 km stretch which takes an hour by road. The train covers the distance in 19 minutes, with a 30 second halt at each station. Each Chennai Metro Rail train can carry about 1,200 people.
To commemorate the inaugural run of Chennai Metro Rail between Koyambedu and Alandur, Tamilnadu Postal Circle released a Special carrier cover featuring the Chennai Metro Rail design and route etc. (Special Cover approval no. TN/17/205). The special cover was released by Shri Mervin Alexander, Postmaster General, Chennai City Region. Special covers were carried during the first journey of the new train. Design of the special cover was taken from The Hindu newspaper. Back side of cover carries information about passenger capacity of each train, speed, travel time and number of stations etc. and delivery marks.
