East
Bengal Club is a professional football club, based in Kolkata and it is the
most consistent football club of India. It was founded on 1st August 1920 by
Suresh Chandra Chaudhuri, Raja Manmatha Nath Chaudhuri, Ramesh Chandra Sen and
Aurobinda Ghosh. East Bengal started the successful journey on the very first
month of their establishment when they won the seven-a-side Hercules Cup. East
Bengal is the only Club to win twice Triple Crown in the History of Indian
Football. First was in the year 1972 when the club won IFA Shield, Durand Cup
and Rovers Cup. The same feat was repeated in the year 1990. The club has won 3
National Football League (India) (later named as I league) titles, 8 Federation
Cups, 3 Indian Super Cups and many more. The club is the current holder of the
Calcutta Football League. The club has represented India the most number of
times in the Asian competitions, with its best performance being a semi-final
berth in the AFC Cup 2013. East Bengal had also won ASEAN Club Championship in
2003. East Bengal Club also has a multi-collaborative tie-in with Leicester
City FC, UK for an exchange program with junior footballers, in respect to
coaching techniques, sports science, and other developmental programs. In 1998,
club signed with Vijay Mallya's United Breweries Group which then formed a new
Private Limited Company called "United East Bengal Football Team Private
Limited". The club also renamed itself as Kingfisher East Bengal FC from
then on.
On
the 97th Foundation Day celebration, Hon'ble Chief Minister of West Bengal Ms.
Mamata Banerjee and Chief Postmaster General, West Bengal Circle, Ms. Arundhaty
Ghosh released a Special Cover in presence of on 1st August 2016 at Kolkata.
Ms. Banerjee also handed over Life Time Achievement Awards to two former
footballers: Shyam Thapa and Shyamal Ghosh.
