The Bangalore Medical College was started as a private Medical college in 1955 by Mysore Education Society. The Founders of this Society were Dr. R. Shivaram, Dr. Mekhri, Dr. B.K. Narayana Rao and Dr. B.V. Ramaswamy. In the year 1957 it was handed over to the then Government of Mysore and was affiliated to Mysore University and then on to the Bangalore University. In the year 1996 it got affiliated to the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences. Now it an Autonomous Institute and ranks among the top medical colleges in the Country. Now it is named as Bangalore Medical College & Research Institute (BMCRI). Many hospitals like Victoria Hospital, Vani Vilas Women and Children's Hospital, Minto Ophthalmic Hospital & Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospitals are attached with BMCRI.
Diamond Jubilee Celebrations of Bangalore Medical College was celebrated from 25th to 27th December 2015. On the occasion of Diamond Jubilee celebrations of Bangalore Medical College a special cover was released by Shri Veerana Goud, Senior Superintendent of Post Offices, Bangalore and was presented to Dean and Director of BMCRI Dr. P. K. Devadass on 25th December 2015 at the function held at Bengaluru (Special Cover approval no. KTK/55/2015). The Occasion was graced by renowned geneticist Dr. Sharat Chandra, IISc, Bangalore, Dr. Srinivas Gowda, Dr. Rajeswari and team from BMC. Special cover is designed by Dr. A. Sumitra philatelist from Bengaluru and member of Karnataka Philatelic Society.
