World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) is observed around the world every year on May 31. It is intended to encourage a 24-hour period of abstinence from all forms of tobacco consumption around the globe. The day is further intended to draw attention to the widespread prevalence of tobacco use and to negative health effects.
Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology (KMIO), Bengaluru is named after the man with a vision for cancer, Shri Rafi Ahmed Kidwai, who donated 20 acres of land. Established in 1973, the Centre was accorded autonomous status in 1980. The Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology being a Regional Cancer Centre is catering to the needs of cancer patients from Karnataka and neighbouring States. Anti-tobacco Cell is involved in bringing about awareness among different categories of persons in the community on the harmful effect of tobacco usage through education wherever possible.
Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology organized an awareness rally in Tumkur to spread awareness about the ill- effects of tobacco among youth on 27th June 2015. To commemorate this event a special cover was released at Tumkur on 27th June 2015. (Special Cover approval no. KTK/46/2015)
